Let’s not overlook the many merits of “status quo” city management, but this year’s mayoral contest is a legitimate opportunity to affect governance over the next four years.

No one knows if anything will change for the better under a Floon (plus Ray Flynn & Mel King), there will at least be the promise of change.

In no particular order:

10 - Future generations might think he did a good job if he becomes the longest-serving mayor in Boston history.

9 - Maybe a 16-year incumbent has too much influence in who gets development deals.

8 - Is there less crime?

7 - How are schools doing?

6 - When people arrive at Logan, another mayor might speak clearly to taxi passengers.

5 - The battle against “Stop Snitching” shirts has made a huge impact on crime, hasn’t it?

4 - With all the smoke around the missing-email/hidden-second-computer story, there has to be some fire.

3 - Shouldn’t an Irish-American politician finally have a chance in the mayor’s office?

2 - Wasn’t his main story at Ted Kennedy’s memorial about squeezing donors for the ‘04 DNC Convention?

1 - Just because he looks hot on bicycle doesn’t mean you have to vote for him.

about describing a fantasy night in vegas:

i’m at the low-roller blackjack table as usual. there’s one cute dealer who i’m flirting with, and i think she’s not hating it. she even laughs now and then. her name is something atypical like mona.

i’m playing my pseudo-system, but the wind is blowing my sails. i feel good, and i’m winning.

(the free drinks are arriving promptly and potent.)

my worst stretches of luck happen when mona rotates back to the table, but she can tell i’ve been doing okay.

the wit keeps on going, and i’m on another roll. so i dare to ask when her shift is over.

it’s an uphill battle. i’m making ludicrous proposals… i’m pleading to her as a fellow red sox fan… obviously, i’ve been tipping all night…

mona finally breaks, and tells me to meet her in front of the palms at 3am.

she actually wants to gamble after her shift, so i play along. now i’m talking too much.

“it’s okay,” she says. “just relax.”

any tension left in my body, and we have splendid six more hours together. mona knows the best breakfast, and she even humors me with a round at the double down saloon.

we exchange info, and i beg her to visit me in boston. i feel like she might call, and that’s good enough.

after hitting a losing streak, i amazingly end up about $1k ahead. a les paul jr is in my future, and a great night in my past.
